Two Serbian uprisings against the Ottoman Empire: the first in 1804-13, the second in 1815-17. The reasons why the Serbs were the first to attempt an uprising in the Balkans and succeeded include: (1) the existence of the Serbian Orthodox Church as the church of the people, (2) the existence of a national epic that preserved Serbian national consciousness, (3) the existence of local self-governing organizations, and (4) Serbia's geographical location on the outskirts of the Ottoman Empire. The first Serbian uprising began in 1804 and was led by the pig trader Karađorđe.

オスマン帝国に対する2度にわたるセルビア人の蜂起。第1次1804‐13年，第2次1815‐17年。セルビア人がバルカン半島で初めて蜂起を企て成功したのは，次のような理由，すなわち(1)民衆の教会としてのセルビア正教会の存続，(2)セルビア人の民族意識を保持した民族叙事詩の存在，(3)地方自治組織の存在，(4)オスマン帝国辺境地としてのセルビアの地理的位置，が考えられる。第1次セルビア蜂起は豚商人のカラジョルジェを指導者として1804年に始まった。
