1904‐68 Soviet author. Born in Taganrog in southern Russia. He started out as a Komsomol cell secretary, then worked in an agricultural commune (kommune) and in party-related work, and pioneered the method of ocherk (documentary literature) which sought to express reality based on his experiences. His early works include Kolkhoz Tales (1935) and Praskovya Maksimovna (1939), as well as Greetings from the Front (1945), which depicts life in rural areas and kolkhozes after World War II, and the series Everyday Life in the District (1952-56), which is considered a masterpiece of ocherk literature.
