Essays from the mid-Edo period. 4 volumes, 4 books. Published in Edo in 1842 (Tenpo 13). Said to be essays by the literary and elegant Yanagisawa Kien, it has been reprinted many times since the Meiji period, but the author's identity remains unclear. The contents are full of interesting anecdotes about the words and deeds of philanthropists and benevolent people that the author heard about in his daily life, as well as his own family history, but the overall tone is moralistic and there is no trace of the refined Kien. The preface states that Kien's 20 volumes of manuscripts were treasured by Kimura Kenkado of Osaka, and that a certain Tokaen excerpted them and compiled them into 4 volumes, but it is believed to be a forgery by Yamazaki Yoshishige, an Edo scholar of general knowledge who was involved with Tokaen and its publishing, who used Kien's fame to create the works.
