Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskii (English spelling)

The capital of Kamchatka Oblast, on the eastern edge of the Russian Federation, and a good port on the eastern coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula. Population 272,600 (1992). With a large ship repair factory and a fishing complex, it is a major fishing base in the Russian Far East. There is also a housing construction complex. There is a volcanological research institute, which is famous for researching the Kuril volcanic belt and creating basic data for the construction of geothermal power plants. There are also fishery and oceanography research institutes, a pedagogical university, a drama theater, and a regional museum, making it one of the cultural centers of the Far East. The town developed as a good port on the Pacific coast after the arrival of the second Kamchatka expedition led by V. Bering and A.I. Chirikov in 1740, and by the beginning of the 19th century it had become one of the administrative and economic centers of the Far East.
