False hallucination

Patients' belief in their hallucinations varies, and while some are aware of their abnormality to some extent (hallucinations caused by partial brain damage, such as brainstem hallucinations), most are convinced that the hallucinations are real. When a patient experiences an auditory hallucination, but only hears a voice inside the head, it is called a pseudohallucination, as opposed to a true hallucination, in which the voice is clearly heard from outside. Auditory hallucinations are often seen in schizophrenia, chronic alcoholism (hallucinosis), and stimulant drug addiction, while visual hallucinations are often seen in patients with impaired consciousness, such as chronic alcoholism and other toxic psychoses and symptomatic psychoses. Tactile hallucinations are seen in schizophrenia, toxic psychoses (cocaine addiction), and symptomatic psychoses. Olfactory hallucinations are seen in toxic psychoses, symptomatic psychoses, schizophrenia, epileptic seizures, and people with phobia of their own smell. Taste hallucinations are seen in toxic psychoses, schizophrenia, and epileptic seizures. Somatic hallucinations are seen in somatosensory disorders, depression, and schizophrenia.
