...An annual plant of the family Diapalaceae that grows in clusters on plateaus. When the crickets start singing, the pale purple flowers bloom beautifully. It is 60-90cm tall and well-branched, with a single capitulum at the end of each branch. The leaves are opposite and pinnately lobed. The capitulum is 4cm in diameter and blooms upward. The corolla is gamopetalous, large around the periphery of the inflorescence, elongating outwards, and tubular and actinosymmetrical in the center. The ovary is inferior and has one drooping ovule. The fruit is enclosed in a tubular bracteolet. It is distributed from Hokkaido to Kyushu. Takanematsumushisou var. alpina Takeda, which grows in alpine and subalpine mountains, is short in height but has large flowers. ...
