One of the oceans in the western Pacific Ocean. An area of sea that stretches along the eastern edge of the Philippine Islands (Luzon, Samal, Mindanao, etc.). Other nearby islands include Palau Islands, Yap Island, Ulithi Atoll, Mariana Islands, Ogasawara Islands, Japanese Islands, Ryukyu Islands, and Taiwan. It stretches 2,900 km from north to south and 2,400 km from east to west, with an area of 1 million km2 . The seafloor was formed as a tectonic basin by folding and faulting during the formation of the surrounding island arcs. The average depth is 6,000 m, and the deepest point is 10,497 m in the Philippine Trench. There are many seamounts that rise from the bottom of the basin, some of which are flat-topped volcanic seamounts covered with coral. The warm North Equatorial Current flows westward across the southern Philippine Sea and strikes the Philippine Islands. Part of it turns north near Luzon and becomes the Kuroshio Current. Part of it returns to the Philippine Sea as the Kuroshio Countercurrent, and part of it becomes the North Equatorial Countercurrent. This is where hurricanes and typhoons originate, and storms are particularly strong in September. This was the battlefield of the decisive battle between Japan and the United States in World War II (1944).
