A district of Otsu City in southern Shiga Prefecture. Formerly known as Zeze Town. The name is said to come from Omonohama Beach, where food was offered to the Otsu Palace in ancient times. During the Edo period, it was a castle town of the Honda clan's Zeze Domain, which had a fief of 60,000 koku, and the ruins of Zeze Castle, a water castle built by Tokugawa Ieyasu after the Battle of Sekigahara, have been turned into a park. The castle gate from that time remains at the front gate of Zeze Shrine (a national important cultural property), and the townscape retains traces of the castle town, but new urban facilities have been constructed around JR Tokaido Main Line Zeze Station, Keihan Zeze Station, and on reclaimed land on the lake shore.
