Mr. Kajiwara

There are families all over the country who claim to be this clan, but most trace their origins to the Kajiwara clan (whose ancestors were Kagemichi or his son Kagehisa), a descendant of the Kanmu Heishi Kamakura clan that arose in Kajiwara-go, Kamakura County, Sagami Province (Kamakura City, Kanagawa Prefecture). Kagehisa's great-grandson (or grandson, according to one theory) Kagetoki held an important position in the early Kamakura Shogunate, and his eldest son, Kagesue, also distinguished himself as a warrior in the vanguard battle at the Uji River, but after the death of Minamoto no Yoritomo, he was driven out of the Shogunate and both father and son were killed in battle at Kitsunegasaki, Suruga Province (Shizuoka City) in January 1200 (Shoji 2). However, some of Kagetoki's grandsons escaped extinction, and were later pardoned, returned to serve the shogunate, and are believed to have taken on the name of Kajiwara in various regions.

各地にこの氏を称する家があるが、多くは、相模国(さがみのくに)鎌倉郡梶原郷（神奈川県鎌倉市）よりおこった桓武平氏(かんむへいし)鎌倉氏流の梶原氏（景通(かげみち)またはその子景久(かげひさ)を始祖とする）に出身を求める。景久の曽孫(そうそん)（一説に孫）景時(かげとき)は草創期鎌倉幕府の重職につき、長子景季(かげすえ)も宇治川(うじがわ)の先陣争いで武名をあげたが、源頼朝(よりとも)の死後幕府を追われ、1200年（正治2）正月、駿河国(するがのくに)狐崎(きつねがさき)（静岡市）で父子ともに戦死した。しかし景時の孫のなかに滅亡を免れた者があり、彼らはのち許されてふたたび幕府に出仕し、各地の梶原氏を称したと思われる。
