A bird of the family Fringillidae (illustration) in the order Passeriformes. Approximately 12 cm long. Smaller than a sparrow. Sexes are heterochromatic. At first glance it appears yellow, but the male's body is especially yellow, with small black vertical stripes scattered on its back and sides. The head and throat are black. The yellow band on the wings and the yellow spot at the base of the tail are particularly noticeable when in flight. The female is less yellow and has a whitish underside. It is distributed from Europe to Central Asia and in eastern Asia. It mainly migrates to Japan as a winter bird, but can sometimes be seen in summer in the subalpine coniferous forests of the mountains of northern Honshu, and it is thought that some breed there.

スズメ目アトリ科の鳥（イラスト）。全長約12cm。スズメより小さい。雌雄異色。一見して黄色く見え，雄はとくに体が黄色く，黒い小縦斑が背面とわきに散在する。頭上とのどは黒い。翼の黄帯と尾の元のほうの黄斑が飛ぶときにはよく目だつ。雌は黄色が弱く，腹面は白っぽい。ヨーロッパから中央アジアまでとアジアの東部に分かれて分布する。日本には主として冬鳥として渡来するが，本州北部の山岳の亜高山針葉樹林にはときに夏でも見られ，繁殖するものがいると考えられる。
