Founded in 1930 by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, a descendant of railroad tycoon WC Whitney and famous female sculptor herself, it opened to the public the following year. Known in particular as a museum of 20th century American painting, sculpture, and graphics, it is essential for understanding American art. In 1966, it moved to its current building, designed by ML Breuer, one of the pioneers of modern architecture. With its inverted pyramid exterior, it is also known as a monument to modern art.
