New words in the world - Sesetsushingo

A collection of anecdotes written by Liu Yiqing (403-444) of the Southern Song Dynasty in China. It contains 36 themes, including the words, deeds, virtues, and language, of people from the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty to the Eastern Jin Dynasty. This book was originally called simply "Shishuo" (World's Tale). It was later renamed "Shishuo Xinshu" (New World's Tale), and the current name was used from the Tang Dynasty, and became established after the Song Dynasty. It also has the characteristics of a history book in that it attempts to record the words, deeds, and anecdotes of people as fact, but in order to express the personalities of the people, it ends up containing quite deliberate fiction, and many stories are clearly contrary to historical fact. However, the cross-sections of the personalities presented in the form of concise short sentences each reveal the customs and values ​​of aristocratic society, and as a whole it vividly reflects the era of the Wei and Jin Dynasties. It is also valued as a linguistic resource because it uses colloquial language of the time.

Furthermore, the annotations by Liu Xiaobiao (462-521) of the Southern Liang Dynasty are essential to understanding this work. Liu Xiaobiao's annotations provide few explanations, but rather supplement the main text with other documents or provide examples of factual inaccuracies, giving a more three-dimensional picture of the world of Shishuo Xinyu. These are materials that are just as valuable as the main text.

中国、南朝宋(そう)の劉義慶(りゅうぎけい)（403―444）が著した逸話集。後漢(ごかん)末から東晋(とうしん)までの人物の言行や逸話を、徳行、言語など36のテーマに分類し、集録している。この書は、初め単に『世説』とよばれていた。その後『世説新書』と改題され、唐代からは現在の名称も使われるようになり、宋代以後定着した。人物の言行や逸話を事実として記録しようとしている点で、史書の性格も帯びているが、人物の個性を表現するために、結果的にはかなり意図的なフィクションが混じっており、明らかに史実に反する話も多い。しかし簡潔な短文形式で示される個性の断面には、それぞれに貴族社会の風俗や価値観がうかがわれ、全体として魏晋(ぎしん)の時代相を鮮やかに映し出している。また当時の口語なども用いられているため、言語資料としても重視されている。

　なおこの書の理解に欠かせないのは、南朝梁(りょう)の劉孝標（462―521）の注である。劉孝標の注は、語釈は少なく、他の文献によって、本文を補足したり、あるいは事実に反していることを例示しつつ、『世説新語』の世界をより立体化している。本文に劣らぬ貴重な資料群である。
