A treatise on painting written by Xie He of the Southern Qi Dynasty during the Northern and Southern Dynasties in China. It was compiled in the first half of the 6th century. It criticizes 27 famous painters from Cao Buxing of the Wu Dynasty to the end of the Southern Qi Dynasty, and in the preface he establishes six rules as standards for painting quality. These include "lively and vibrant," "solid drawing," "capturing the shape of things realistically," "coloring each individual thing," "thinking and coming up with creative compositions," and "copying ancient paintings as the secret to improvement." These came to be valued as the foundation of a painter's knowledge and theories of painting, and have made Xie He's name immortal.
