Born: December 15, 1887 in Dordrecht
Died: December 31, 1966. Utrecht. Dutch historian. Also known as Geir. After studying history at Leiden University, he became a journalist before becoming a professor at the University of London. As professor of modern history at Utrecht University from 1935 onwards, he published many works, presented many new views on Belgium's history, and trained many students. He also pointed out the historical and cultural unity of Belgium, including the Flemish-speaking region, and advocated the idea of a Greater Netherlands, exerting an influence on the country. His most famous work is Geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Stam (6 volumes, 1930-37).

オランダの歴史家。ゲイルとも呼ばれる。ライデン大学で歴史を学んだのち，ジャーナリストを経てロンドン大学教授となった。 1935年以降ユトレヒト大学で近代史の教授として多数の著作を発表し，自国の歴史について新しい見解を数多く提示し，また多くの弟子を養成した。他方，ベルギーのフラマン語地域を含めた歴史的・文化的統一を指摘して大ネーデルラント主義を唱え影響を与えた。『ネーデルラント民族史』 Geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Stam (6巻，1930～37) が代表的著作である。
