A nymph in Greek mythology. She lived in a cave on the island of Ogygia near the Strait of Gibraltar, where she lived a paradise life. When Odysseus was shipwrecked on his journey home from Troy, she held him back for 10 years, hoping to grant him immortality and make him her husband. However, Odysseus was determined to return home and would not accept her offer, so she finally followed the orders of Zeus, conveyed through Hermes, and sent him off from the island. Latinus, the eponym of the Latin people in the legend of the founding of Rome, is said to be her son born from Odysseus's seed.
