Schiff's Reagent - Schiff's Reagent

It is also called fuchsin-aldehyde reagent. It was invented by German organic chemist H. Schiff. It is famous as a reagent for detecting aldehydes, and is often used to distinguish between aldehydes and ketones. If 0.2 g of fuchsin is dissolved in 200 mL of water, 15 mL of sulfurous acid is added, and the solution is left overnight, it will decolorize and become colorless. If one drop of this reagent is added to an aldehyde test solution and shaken, it will react at room temperature and turn reddish purple. However, this reaction is not observed with ketones. This reaction is a sensitive color reaction for aldehydes.

フクシンアルデヒド試薬(fuchsin-aldehyde reagent)ともいう．ドイツの有機化学者H. Schiffによって創案された．アルデヒドの検出試薬として有名であり，アルデヒドとケトンを判別する目的で用いられることが多い．フクシン0.2 g を水200 mL に溶解，これに亜硫酸15 mL を加えて一夜放置すると，脱色されて無色になる．この試薬1滴をアルデヒドの検液に加えて振ると，室温で反応して赤紫色を呈する．しかし，ケトンはこの反応がみられない．この反応はアルデヒドに対しては鋭敏な呈色反応である．
