Cotton weaving industry

Japanese: 綿織物業 - めんおりものぎょう

A general term for the industry that produces textiles using thread (cotton yarn) spun from cotton as the main raw material. Cotton textiles are also called cotton cloth, and are broadly divided into raw cotton cloth and processed cotton cloth depending on whether they have been processed or not. Raw cotton cloth is woven from spun thread and is not refined or bleached after weaving, while processed cotton cloth is cotton cloth that has been refined, bleached, dyed, or processed. Cotton textiles are characterized by their low price and durability, as well as their excellent moisture absorption and heat retention. For this reason, they are used for practical clothing such as undergarments and underwear, and more recently for luxury clothing, and have a wide range of uses.

綿花を主原料にして紡いだ糸(綿糸)を用いて織物をつくる業種の総称。綿織物は綿布とも呼ばれ，加工の有無によって生地綿布と加工綿布に大別される。生地綿布は紡績したままの糸で織り，織り上げた後も精練や漂白をほどこさない綿布，加工綿布は精練，漂白，染色などの加工をほどこした綿布である。綿織物の特徴は価格が安くてじょうぶであると同時に，吸湿性や保温性に優れていることである。このため肌着や下着などの実用的な衣料に用いられるとともに，最近では高級衣料にも用いられ，広い用途に使用されている。
