...This refers to the phenomenon in which a substance undergoes a chemical reaction with an oxidizing agent such as oxygen to produce a product, and at the same time releases energy in the form of heat or light. This is therefore both a process of substance transformation and a process of energy transformation, but the former is not often used in practice, so the latter is the main focus of application. A range of devices and equipment, from household kitchens and heating appliances to automobile and aircraft engines, and even industrial furnaces, are examples of controlled energy transformation, while fires and explosions are cases where control fails and energy goes out of control.
