A general term for insects belonging to the Diptera order, family Psychodidae, subfamily Phlebotominae. Although the name suggests they are a type of fly, they are actually part of the suborder Longhorn (a type of mosquito). Only females suck blood. Like horseflies and biting midges, their mouthparts suck the blood that leaks out after a wound in the skin. Most species suck the blood of cold-blooded animals such as lizards and snakes, but some species suck the blood of warm-blooded animals, including humans. They are common in the tropics and subtropics, and there are over 1,000 species recorded worldwide, but in Japan, only one species each has been recorded in the Tohoku region and Okinawa.
