Wirehaired Fox Terrier

Japanese: ワイヤヘアード･フォックス･テリア[種]（英語表記）wirehaired fox terrier

A domestic dog originating from England. Developed in the mid-18th century based on the ancient working terrier, it was called the fox terrier from the mid-19th century. As its name suggests, it was originally used for fox hunting, and was praised for its keen sense of smell and eyesight, sturdy endurance, and bold and courageous nature, and was included in the hunting breeds. In the 20th century, its smart and aristocratic appearance was welcomed, and it developed as a show dog. Its coat is mainly white with black and tan spots on its back and ears, and it is considered coarse and slightly curly, and the harder it is, the better. It is customary for the tail to be docked to a length that matches the height of the top of the head when it is standing.

原産地がイギリスの家庭犬。古代のワーキング･テリアを基礎に18世紀中ごろに作出されたイヌで，19世紀中ごろからフォックス･テリアと呼ばれた。当初は名称のようにキツネ猟に使われ，鋭い臭覚と視力，たくましい耐久力，大胆で勇敢な性質が称揚され，猟犬種に入れられていた。20世紀に入りスマートで貴族的な容姿が迎えられ，ショー･ドッグとして発展した。被毛は白が基調で背と耳に黒とタン(茶褐色)の斑があり，粗剛でやや縮れ，硬いほどよいとされ，また尾は起立時の頭頂の高さに合致する長さに断尾される習慣になっている。
