Hematite

Hematite

It is an iron ore mineral. It is heteromorphic with maghemite. It occurs in sedimentary rocks or as a metamorphic product thereof, forming huge deposits, as well as in contact metasomatic deposits (skarn-type deposits), various hydrothermal deposits, ore deposit oxidation zones, certain volcanic rocks, regional metamorphic rocks of low metamorphic grade, and as a coloring component in granitic pegmatites and cherts. Its euhedral shape is hexagonal plate-like or short columnar. In sedimentary rocks, it forms kidney-shaped or egg-shaped aggregates. In Japan, it was mined as an ore at the Waga Sennin Mine (closed) in Iwate Prefecture and the Akatani Mine (closed) in Shibata City, Niigata Prefecture. Its English name comes from the Greek word hematitis, which means blood red, due to the red color of its striations. In addition, the one with well-developed crystal faces is called specularite, and the one with parallel cleavage developed on the basal plane is called micaceous iron ore. These two are sometimes collectively called pyrite. It is used as a red pigment.
