Born: October 30, 1513, Melun Died: February 6, 1593. Auxerre. French classical scholar and translator. After receiving his education in classical languages mainly in Paris, he taught Greek at the University of Bourges for a time. He taught future kings Charles IX and Henry III, and became Bishop of Auxerre in 1570. While simultaneously living at court, in academia, and at church, he worked on translating ancient Greek literature, making a great contribution to making difficult works widely known to the world. He particularly made his name with his translations of Plutarch's Les Vies des hommes illustres (1559) and Les Œuvres morales (72), which he began in 1542 at the request of King Francis I and which were later used by Montaigne. His unique style became a typical example of French prose. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
