Psyche

Japanese: プシュケー

Means "soul" in Greek. She is the protagonist of Cupid and Psyche, an episode in Apuleius's The Golden Ass. The beautiful Psyche marries Cupid (Eros, Amor), the god of love, who hides his true identity. Desperate to find out his true identity, despite it being forbidden, she turns on a lamp one night and sees that her husband is a beautiful young man. He runs away, and after many trials the two are happily united. This became a favorite subject for paintings in later generations. As a common noun, psyche originally meant "breath" and later became associated with the concept of the soul. The English word "psychology" originates from this. E. Rode's research (1890) in which psyche was placed in the history of Greek religion is famous.

ギリシア語で〈魂〉の意。アプレイウス《黄金のろば》中の挿話〈クピドとプシュケー〉の主人公。絶世の美女プシュケーは素姓を隠した愛神クピド（エロス，アモル）と夫婦となる。禁じられているにもかかわらず正体を知りたい一心で，ある夜ランプをつけて見ると，夫は美青年だった。彼は逃げ出し，数々の試練ののちにめでたく二人は結ばれる。後世好まれた画題。普通名詞としてのプシュケーは元来〈気息〉の意で，のち霊魂概念と結びつくようになった。英語psychology（心理学）などはこれに由来する。プシュケーをギリシア宗教史に位置づけたE.ローデの研究（1890年）は有名。
