One-page oath - Ichimai Kishomon

Japanese: 一枚起請文 - いちまいきしょうもん

Written by Honen (Genku). It is said to have been written in January of the second year of the Kenryaku era ( 1212 ) (some say it was December of the first year of the same year) at the request of his disciple Seikan when he was on his deathbed. It is said to be written on a single sheet of paper, as it shows the essence of his faith, in order to prevent any disagreements from arising among his disciples after his death. One sheet is a pledge. One sheet is a message. One sheet is an oath.

法然（源空）作。建暦二年（一二一二）正月（同元年一二月の説もある）臨終の病床にあって、弟子の勢観の要請に応じたものとされる。没後に弟子たちの間で異議が生ずることを防ぐために、自己の信仰の神髄を示したもので、一枚の紙に書かれたところからいう。一枚起請。一枚御消息。一枚御誓文。
