1805‐71 A German democrat active during the revolution of 1848. Born in Cologne as the son of a legal advisor, he studied law at the universities of Bonn and Heidelberg. While a student, he participated in the Burschenschaft movement and was arrested, but in September 1832 he escaped prison and traveled to Paris, where he founded the League of Exiles, the predecessor of the League of the Righteous, together with Theodor Schuster and others. His basic position, as seen in the articles published in the league's journal, The Exiles, was that social reform should be used to avoid the outbreak of violent revolution, which put him at odds with Schuster, who advocated social revolution, and this conflict was one of the reasons for the league's split.
