William of Ockham

...theologian and logician. Born in Surrey, near London, England, he entered the Franciscan order and studied theology at Oxford University, where he qualified as a professor of theology, but was unable to take up the position due to interference from university authorities who viewed his theories as heretical. In 1324, he was summoned to the papacy in Avignon to respond to charges of heresy, and in his third year there he became embroiled in a debate over poverty, which divided the Franciscans at the time, and his life changed dramatically from then on. Ockham studied the issue of poverty at the direction of Michael of Cesena, the Franciscan general who rebelled against the decisions of Pope John XXII, insisting that poverty should be taken in a strict sense. He became convinced that the pope was wrong, and secretly followed the general out of Avignon, fleeing to seek protection from Louis IV of Bavaria, who had taken the throne after clearly taking an anti-papal stance. ...
