Japanese: 精神生理学 - せいしんせいりがく（英語表記）psychophysiology

This is a science that physiologically studies the physical aspects of normal human behavior and mental activity, as well as pathological mental states, and aims to elucidate the physiological mechanisms that underpin mental function. Research subjects cover all normal and abnormal mental phenomena, including sensory and cognitive functions in response to perceptual and emotional stimuli, mental tasks such as response and learning, sensory deprivation, conditioned reflexes, sleep and sleep deprivation, hypnosis and Zen, disorders of consciousness, autism and idleness in schizophrenia, elation and depression in manic-depressive illness, epileptic seizures, and delirium tremens in alcoholism.

人の正常な行動や精神活動あるいは病的な精神状態の身体的側面を生理学的に研究する学問をいい，精神機能を営むうえで基盤となっている生理学的な機序を解明することを目的とする。研究対象は，知覚刺激や情動刺激に対する感覚や認知機能，応答や学習などの精神作業，感覚遮断，条件反射，睡眠や断眠，催眠や禅，意識障害，精神分裂病の自閉や無為，躁鬱（そううつ）病の気分の高揚や抑鬱，癲癇（てんかん）発作，アルコール依存での振戦譫妄（せんもう）など，正常精神現象と異常精神現象のすべてにわたっている。
