A method for producing metallic sodium invented by H. Kastner in 1886. Sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) is melted at about 340°C and electrolyzed to produce sodium and hydrogen in the cathode chamber and oxygen in the anode chamber. Although it has the advantage of a low operating temperature, it has a low current efficiency (about 40%) and is not widely used today. There is also Kastner's salt water electrolysis method, but the Kastner method refers to the former.
