Ceramic powder is the main ingredient, and metal powder is mixed with this as a binder, which is then pressure-molded and heated and sintered in a special gas or vacuum. The name cermet is a combination of "cer" (ceramic) and "met" (metal). Ceramics include metal oxides, carbides, nitrides, borides, and silicides, while metals include Ni, Cr, Co, Mo, W, and their alloys. Although it has low toughness, it has high corrosion resistance and hardness at high temperatures, so it is used as a high-temperature material for coating jet engine exhaust pipes and solid rocket nozzles, and as a tool material with performance intermediate between that of cemented carbide and ceramics. For example, 70% by mass Al ₂ O ₃ -30% by mass Cr can be used up to 1100°C for jet engines, and MoSi ₂ ·6Co can be used up to 1200°C. As a tool material, 80% by mass TiC, 10% by mass Ni, and 10% by mass Mo shows better cutting performance than cemented carbide when used as a cutting tool, and some can be used for high-temperature molds, roll guides, valve seats, etc.

セラミックス(ceramics)粉末を主成分とし，これに結合剤として金属(metal)の粉末を混合して加圧成形し，特殊ガスまたは真空中で加熱焼結したもの．セラミックスの“cer”と金属の“met”をつないでcermetと名づけられた．セラミックスとしては，金属酸化物，炭化物，窒化物，ホウ化物，およびケイ化物など，また金属としては，Ni，Cr，Co，Mo，W，およびこれらの合金が使用される．靭性は低いが，高温での耐食性や硬さが大きいので，ジェットエンジン排気管の被覆用や固体ロケットノズルなどの高温材料として，また超硬合金とセラミックスの中間的性能をもった工具材料として用いられる．ジェットエンジン用の例としては70質量％ Al₂O₃-30質量％ Crが1100 ℃ まで，またMoSi₂･6Coが1200 ℃ まで使用可能であり，工具材料では80質量％ TiC，10質量％ Ni，10質量％ Moが切削工具として超硬合金よりすぐれた切削性能を示すほか，高温金型，ロールガイド，弁座などに使用できるものもある．
