Desiccator - Desiccator (English spelling)

Desiccator - Desiccator (English spelling)

A type of chemical laboratory equipment, a container used for drying and storing hygroscopic solids and liquids. It is usually made of thick glass, and the lid and the container body are ground together to fit tightly together.

The container body has a structure in which the bottom plate is held by a constriction, and the desiccant is placed under the bottom plate, and the sample is placed on the bottom plate. It is common to apply a thin layer of grease to the mating parts of the lid and body to improve adhesion, but it is better not to apply grease when drying iodine or using concentrated sulfuric acid as a desiccant. There are also light-blocking containers made of brown glass, and containers for drying under reduced pressure that have a side tube with a cock extending from the lid or body, but when using under reduced pressure, care should be taken to prevent breakage (explosive scattering of fragments) by wrapping tape around them, etc.
