1929‐74 Soviet novelist, film director, and actor. Born into a farming family in the Altai region of Siberia, he lost his father at a young age in 1932, and in the chaotic period following World War II, from 1946 to 1948, he left home to help feed the poor, leading a nomadic life moving from one provincial city to another. He served in the navy for four years, but retired in 1952 due to ill health. He worked as a substitute teacher in his hometown before entering a film university in 1954. He distinguished himself as an actor, and in the mid-1960s he created his own world as a short story writer and film director, but died suddenly on location after completing the film Karina the Red (1973), which he wrote and performed himself, and which cemented his national popularity.
