Soviet novelist, film director, and actor. Born into a farming family in the Altai region of Siberia, he lost his father at a young age in 1932, and in the chaotic period following World War II, from 1946 to 1948, he left home to help feed the poor, leading a nomadic life moving from one provincial city to another. He served in the navy for four years, but retired in 1952 due to ill health. He worked as a substitute teacher in his hometown before entering a film university in 1954. He distinguished himself as an actor, and in the mid-1960s he created his own world as a short story writer and film director, but died suddenly on location after completing the film Karina the Red (1973), which he wrote and performed himself, and which cemented his national popularity.

ソ連邦の小説家，映画監督，俳優。シベリアのアルタイ地方の農家の出身。1932年，幼くして父を失い，第2次大戦後の混乱期の46‐48年には口減らしのため家を出て，地方都市を転々とする放浪生活を送った。4年間海軍に勤務したが，健康をそこねて52年退役し，故郷の代用教員から54年映画大学に入学した。俳優として頭角を現し，60年代半ばには短編作家，映画監督としても独自の世界を築いたが，国民的人気を決定的にした自作自演の映画《赤いカリーナ》(1973)を完成後，撮影先で急死した。
