The islands are made up of six small islands in the Banda Sea in eastern Indonesia. They have a total area of 44 km2 and a population of about 15,000. The administrative center is on Banda Neira Island. As the nickname "Nutmeg Islands" suggests, they have long been known as a specialty producer of nutmeg. Albuquerque, Viceroy of Goa, Portugal, occupied Malacca in 1511 and reached the islands the following year to purchase spices, but thereafter the spice trade between Portugal and Spain was mainly concentrated in the northern part of the Maluku Islands, and the Banda Islands were largely left alone during the 16th century.

インドネシア東部，バンダ海にある六つの小島からなる。総面積44km2，人口約1万5000。行政の中心はバンダ･ネイラ島にある。ナツメグ諸島の異名が示すように，ナツメグ(ニクズク)の特産地として古くから知られた。ポルトガルのゴア副王アルブケルケは1511年にマラッカを占領し，翌年この諸島に到達して香辛料の買付けを行ったが，以後ポルトガルとスペインの香料貿易争奪は主としてモルッカ諸島北部に集中し，バンダ諸島は16世紀のあいだほとんど放置された。
