A book written by Yamaga Soko, a Confucian scholar and military scholar in the early Edo period. Three volumes. Completed in 1665 (Kanbun 5) and published the following year. Prior to this work, Soko's disciples had compiled the Yamaga Gorui, and this book is an excerpt and summary of the "Sacred Learning Chapter" from volumes 33 to 43 of that work. Upon its publication, the shogunate deemed this book an "indecent book," and Soko was exiled to Ako in Harima. In this book, he criticizes Neo-Confucianism, which he himself once believed in, systematically develops the Sugyo school after the turn from ancient learning, which states that "one takes the Duke of Zhou and Confucius as one's teacher, and does not take the Confucian scholars of the Han, Tang, Song, or Ming dynasties as one's teacher," and provides concise and concise explanations of 28 important terms, such as "saint," "way," "reason," "virtue," "sincerity," "heaven and earth," "nature," "heart," and "origin of the path." This book almost completely captures the essence of "sacred learning" (Sugyo school), which he himself described as a teaching that follows the principles of heaven and earth, does not go against the feelings of people, does not abandon business or rituals, and does not toy with the nature and heart of people, but gives concrete teachings, and in that sense, this book should be called the "fundamentals of Sugyo school."
