Born: May 17, 1844 in Westphalia [Died] 1918.1.7? German scholar of the Near East and the Old Testament. Born in Hamelin to a Lutheran pastor. After studying in Göttingen, he became a professor of theology in Greiwald. He later turned to Near East studies and taught at the universities of Halle and Göttingen. He summarized the results of critical research on the Pentateuch in the 19th century and, based on this, opened up new perspectives on the history of ancient Israel. He also produced excellent research on the Gospels and early Israelite traditions. His works include "Der Text der Bücher Samuelis" (1871), which examines the original text of the Books of Samuel, "Die Pharisaeer und die Sadducaeer" (74), and "Die Composition des Hexateuchs" (85).
