...There are many names in mathematics, beginning with Thales and Pythagoras in the 6th century BC, but the most important are Euclid (Euclides) and Archimedes in the 3rd century BC. Euclid's major work, the Elements (13 volumes), is also called the Elements of Geometry, because it contains a lot of geometry-related content, but it also deals with number theory and real number theory, and is a systematic compilation of the results of Greek mathematics that had been achieved up to that point. It seems to have been used as a textbook in the Mouseion, the hall of learning in Alexandria, the cultural center of the time, and many copies remain, and a text that appears to be almost complete was restored by a 19th century mathematics historian. ...
