An annual or biennial plant of the Asteraceae family. It is also called cornflower. Native to eastern and southern Europe, it is cultivated in gardens and flower beds for decorative purposes. The stem branches at the bottom and grows to a height of 80-100 cm. The leaves are covered with white fluffy hairs. The leaves are alternate, 5-10 cm long, and the lower ones are obovate and shallowly pinnately lobed, while the upper ones are linear and entire or slightly serrated. From early summer to autumn, a single flower head is produced at the tip of the stem. The arrowhead flower head consists of tubular flowers only, but the peripheral ones have a slightly larger corolla that is lobed into several pieces and looks like a ray flower. The flower color is usually blue-purple, but there are varieties in various colors such as pink, bright red, sky blue, and white. The involucre is urn-shaped and 1-2 cm in diameter. In the horticultural world, it is often called cornflower, but since there is a mountain plant of the same name in the Saxifragaceae family, it is distinguished by being called knapweed.
