One of the ancient Japanese surnames. Also written as Abiko, Amago, or Ago, it was originally the name of a position related to the Imperial Court, and later became a surname and given name. From the example of "Abiko of Yosami no Miyake" in the September entry of the 43rd year of the Nintoku era in the Nihon Shoki, it is said that there were cases where people were appointed to local officials with close ties to the Imperial Court, such as Miyake in the Kinai region. There are various theories about the meaning of Abiko, but it may be a combination of the prefix A (I, I) that expresses familiarity with hiko (hiko, hiko), which means a fine man.
