Also known as a vegetable market, this is a wholesale market for fresh produce such as vegetables and fruits. Because it deals in fresh food, it developed in cities and their surrounding areas. In Edo, Komagome first opened in the 1570s during the Warring States period, and was then opened in Senju and Kanda, before forming distribution markets for commercial crops in various places, such as Tenma in Osaka and Yaoyacho in Kyoto. Those in large cities were integrated into central wholesale markets under the Central Wholesale Market Law of 1923. As of 1999, there were 87 markets in 56 cities, but off-market distribution, such as direct delivery by courier from the producers, is also on the rise. → Kanda Vegetable Market Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
