Japanese: 猛禽類 - もうきんるい（英語表記）birds of prey; raptors

A general term for birds of the orders Accipitridae, Falconiformes, and Strigiformes. They generally have sharp beaks and talons, and mainly prey on insects, mammals, and birds. Some birds, such as the osprey, are fish-eating. However, birds of other orders are not included in the raptors, even if they have these habits. Eagles and owls were once considered to be in the same order of the class Aves, but today they are classified into different orders due to convergence in their morphological similarities. Eagles and owls are sometimes called diurnal raptors and owls nocturnal raptors.

タカ目，ハヤブサ目，フクロウ目の鳥の総称。一般的には鋭い嘴と爪をもち，おもに昆虫類や哺乳類，鳥類を捕食する。ミサゴのように魚食性のものもいる。しかし，こうした習性をもっていても，ほかの目（もく）の鳥は猛禽類には含めない。ワシタカ類とフクロウ類は，古くは鳥綱の同じ目として扱われていたが，形態的な類似が収斂によることから，今日では別の目に分類されている。なお，ワシタカ類を昼行性猛禽類，フクロウ類を夜行性猛禽類ということもある。
