Although it usually refers to the field of chemistry that applies lasers, it can also refer to the research field of chemical reactions that produce chemical lasers. Lasers have characteristics such as monochromaticity, directionality, high intensity, coherence, and the ability to generate ultrashort pulses. By combining these characteristics, chemical reactions induced by the excitation of substances and molecules by lasers are being applied to isotope separation, ultrafine processing for VLSI manufacturing, synthesis of organic compounds, etc.

通常はレーザーを応用した化学の分野をさすが，化学レーザーを生ずる化学反応の研究分野をもさすことがある。レーザーには，単色性，指向性，大強度，コヒーレンス，時間的に短い超短パルスを発生させることができるなどの特徴があり，これらを組み合わせて，レーザーによる物質や分子の励起によって誘起された化学反応を応用して，同位体分離，超LSI製造のための超微細加工，有機化合物の合成などに応用されようとしている。
