Chinese Academy of Sciences

Japanese: 中国科学院 - ちゅうごくかがくいん
Chinese Academy of Sciences

The Academy of Sciences of the People's Republic of China. Internationally known as the Academia Sinica, it was established in November 1949 by taking over the Nationalist government's Academia Sinica and Peking Institute, and adding new research fields. The first president was Guo Moruo. As of 2005, the Academy has more than 140 research institutes (agriculture and medicine are separate organizations) under six faculties: the School of Mathematics and Physics, School of Chemistry, School of Life Sciences and Medicine, School of Earth Sciences, School of Information Technology and Science, and School of Engineering Sciences, covering fields such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, earth sciences, astronomy, biology, technology, science history, and information science and technology. It also has the University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei (Anhui Province) as a research training institution (the research academy is in Beijing), as well as facilities such as an astronomical observatory, a zoo and botanical garden, a scientific instruments factory, a library, a publishing company, and a printing factory. The main hospital is located in Xicheng District, Beijing, and has branch hospitals in 13 locations across the country, including Shanghai, Nanjing, Xi'an, Lanzhou, and Urumqi, where there are relatively many facilities.

The institute employs a total of 90,000 staff, of which approximately 60,000 are specialist technicians. In addition to full-time researchers, it also has the participation of outstanding scholars from universities and other institutions, and carries out more than 5,000 research projects a year. It also collects and disseminates information on science and technology both domestically and internationally. Its operations are decided at a meeting of academicians, elected every two years from among scientists and researchers from across the country. As of 2005, the institute has 1,027 academicians (total including deceased members). Since 1997, its president has been Lu Yongxiang (1942-).

Publications such as the journal "Science Weekly" are published by the university's own scientific publishers or by affiliated publishers.
