A theme in Christian art. The Gospels tell us very little about Jesus Christ's childhood. One of these is the story of the flight of the Holy Family to Egypt and its sojourn there, and the return of the Virgin Mary to the town of Nazareth, in Matthew 2:13-15, 19-23. Luke 2:39 onwards reports on Jesus' healthy growth in the town and his visit to the temple in Jerusalem at the age of 12. Based on these, many apocryphal and traditional accounts tell of his childhood with his parents. The most frequently depicted scene is one that developed from the scene of the resting place on the flight to Egypt, and has a rich landscape as its background. Many variations were later created, including the young John the Baptist and Elizabeth, the Virgin Mary's mother Anna, and other saints. In addition, images based on apocryphal texts such as the Gospel of Thomas, such as the young Jesus helping his foster father Joseph with his carpentry, were added, and these images appeared frequently in Renaissance and Baroque art of the 15th to 17th centuries, when secular elements became stronger. Examples include Raphael's Holy Family with the Canigiani (1507, Munich, Alte Pinakothek).
