Ling-Temco-Vought is an American conglomerate that focuses on steel. It is famous for being the company that was built by James Ling, the son of an oilfield worker. After World War II, it was founded as Ling Electric, an electrical contracting company with capital of $30 million. It started by acquiring LM Electronics in 1953, and then acquired aerospace company Temco Aircraft in 1960 and aircraft manufacturer Chance Vought in 1961, changing its name to Ling-Temco-Vought. It continued to acquire electronics companies, financial companies, airlines, and more, and in 1967 it merged with Wilson Foods, the third largest meat processor in the United States, and split it into three, which made it famous overnight. However, its acquisition of Jones & Laughlin Steel (the seventh largest steel company in the United States) in 1968 violated antitrust laws, and it was hit by a financial crisis, leading to losses in 1969 and 1970. Ling left its top position in 1970. The company changed its name to LTV in 1972. It began operating under bankruptcy law in 1986, filed a reorganization plan with the bankruptcy court in 1991 and completed it in June 1993. It filed for bankruptcy in December 2000.
