1825‐89 Italian politician. He was actively involved in the Risorgimento (Italian unification) movement, including the War of Independence in 1848, the Milan Uprising in 1853, the War of Independence in 1859, and the Thousand-Man Expedition to Sicily in 1860. From 1861 onwards, he belonged to the left wing of the Italian Chamber of Deputies and worked hard for Irredentismo (the movement to recover unrecovered territories). After a left-wing government was established in 1876, he served as Prime Minister twice. His life is a typical example of the path taken by the left wing of the Risorgimento movement.
