Benedetto Cairoli

Italian politician. He was actively involved in the Risorgimento (Italian unification) movement, including the War of Independence in 1848, the Milan Uprising in 1853, the War of Independence in 1859, and the Thousand-Man Expedition to Sicily in 1860. From 1861 onwards, he belonged to the left wing of the Italian Chamber of Deputies and worked hard for Irredentismo (the movement to recover unrecovered territories). After a left-wing government was established in 1876, he served as Prime Minister twice. His life is a typical example of the path taken by the left wing of the Risorgimento movement. イタリアの政治家。1848年の独立戦，53年のミラノ蜂起，59年の独立戦，そして60年の千人隊シチリア遠征など，リソルジメント(イタリア統一)運動に活発にかかわる。61年以降はイタリア王国下院議員として議会内左派に属し，イレデンティズモ(未回収地回復運動)に努力する。76年に左派政権が成立した後2回首相をつとめる。その生涯はリソルジメント運動左派がたどった軌跡の典型的なもののひとつである。【柴野均】
