The new capital of Sri Lanka is adjacent to the southeast of Colombo, the former capital of the country. It has a population of 107,000 (1988). It was the capital of the Sinhalese Kingdom from the 14th to 16th centuries, just before it became a Portuguese colony. During the colonial period, it was known as Kotte, but the old name, which means "victory city," happened to be the same as the name of President JR Jayewardene (inaugurated in 1982), so it was revived and used. At the president's suggestion, a new parliament building was built, and from 1983, the capital functions were gradually transferred from Colombo to Kotte, pending its completion.
