A disease that causes acute inflammatory lesions in the brain due to herpes viruses. Herpes viruses that cause encephalitis include herpes simplex virus, varicella zoster virus, and cytomegalovirus, but the following describes herpes simplex encephalitis. There are two types of herpes simplex virus, type 1 and type 2, and this disease is caused by type 1 virus. It develops suddenly with fever (up to 40°C), headache, vomiting, convulsions, etc., leading to impaired consciousness, and mental symptoms such as excitement and delirium, as well as aphasia and hemiplegia.

ヘルペスウイルスにより脳に急性炎症性の病変をきたす疾患。脳炎を起こすヘルペスウイルスとしては，単純ヘルペスウイルス，帯状疱疹ウイルス，サイトメガロウイルスなどがあるが，以下は単純ヘルペス脳炎について述べる。　単純ヘルペスウイルスは1型と2型があるが，この疾患は1型ウイルスにより起こる。発熱(40℃に及ぶ)，頭痛，嘔吐，痙攣（けいれん）などにより急激に発症し，意識障害をきたし，興奮，譫妄（せんもう）などの精神症状を呈し，失語症，片麻痺などもみられる。
