Zi-bu-yu - Shifugo (English spelling)

Japanese: 子不語 - しふご（英語表記）Zi-bu-yu

A collection of short stories written in literary language during the Qing Dynasty, China. Written by Yuan Mei. 24 volumes in the main text and 10 volumes in the sequel. The main text was completed around 1788 (53rd year of the Qianlong reign), and the sequel in 57th year of the Qianlong reign. It is a collection of strange and bizarre stories that the author had written down since his youth. The title is based on the phrase "The Master does not speak, but speaks of strange and bizarre things" from the Analects of Confucius, and means that the author deliberately collected strange and bizarre stories that Confucius avoided talking about. Later, upon learning that a book of the same name existed during the Yuan Dynasty, the author renamed it Xinqihui (New Qi Hue). Like Ji Yin's Yuewei Caotang Biji, it was written under the influence of the popularity of Liao Zhai Zhiyi (Strange Stories from a Liaozhai). The writing style is concise, but it also contains some rather vulgar stories, which have been deleted in some editions.

中国，清の文語短編小説集。袁枚 (えんばい) の著。正 24巻，続 10巻。正編は乾隆 53 (1788) 年頃，続編は同 57年頃成立。著者が若い頃から書きとめておいた奇事異談をまとめたもの。書名は『論語』の「子不語怪力乱神」に基づき，孔子が避けて語らなかった怪異談をわざと集めたという意。のち同名の書が元代にあったことを知って『新斉諧 (しんせいかい) 』と改名した。紀いん (きいん) の『閲微草堂筆記』と同じく『聊斎志異』の流行に刺激を受けて書かれた。簡潔な文体だが，やや猥雑な話も含まれ，版によってはそれを削除している。
