The term is used from the perspective of Danish history to refer to the "Schleswig-Holstein Question." In the 19th century, amid rising nationalism between Denmark and Germany, a dispute arose over the ownership of the Danish duchy of Slesvig (German: Schleswig). The demands of the German Schleswig-Holsteinists and the Danish liberal Ejderpolitik were in direct conflict with each other.
