Also called a sonagraph. A device that records and analyzes sound, especially the human voice, in a visible form. First, the sound is magnetically recorded on a rotating disk. Then, while repeatedly playing back the sound, bandpass filters are used to frequency analyze the waveform, and the time-dependent changes in the frequency spectrum are recorded on recording paper. The resulting record is called a spectrogram (sonagram), which graphically displays various characteristics of the sound. It is particularly used to learn about the structure of formants, their transitions, and changes in pitch. The shading pattern of formants is also called visible speech. In addition to being used to analyze and correct the human voice, it is also used to analyze vibrations that change rapidly over time. Although sonagraph was originally a trademark name, it is sometimes used as a common noun.

ソナグラフともいう。音響，特に人間の声を目に見える形に記録して分析をする装置。まず音声を回転円板に磁気録音する。次にそれを繰返し再生しつつ帯域フィルタなどを用いて波形を周波数分析し，その周波数スペクトルの時間的変化を記録紙上に記録する。得られた記録をスペクトログラム (ソナグラム) といい，音声のいろいろな特徴が図形的に表示されている。特にフォルマントの構造やその変移，声の高さの変化などを知るのに使われる。フォルマントの濃淡模様はビジブルスピーチともいう。人間の声の分析や矯正に用いられるほかに，時間的に急激な変化をする振動の分析などにも使われる。なお，ソナグラフは元来商標名であるが，普通名詞として使われることがある。
