A port city on the Gulf of Thailand at the base of the Malay Peninsula in southern Thailand. Formerly Ligor. Exports seafood, copra, rubber, tin, etc. Traditional crafts such as silver inlay and shadow puppets (Nan) are also produced here. Old temples such as Wat Mahathat are located here. Ligor was a tributary state to the Sukhothai, Ayutthaya, and Bangkok dynasties. Yamada Nagamasa was appointed governor of the area and died here. Population: 269,433 (2006).
